Q. Can Thomson provide a kitchen plan?
A. Yes, our staff can transform your old space and design your new kitchen using the latest kitchen design software. We can also do a computer walk-thru of your new kitchen in our showroom.
Q. What if I have my own plans?
A. We can construct your new kitchen from your own professionally detailed & scaled drawings.
Q. Can I use your plans to get other bids?
A. Our plans are released upon acceptance of a kitchen contract. Hours of experience, energy, creativity and emotion are put into each design by our designers. Each design is therefore unique, and protected by copy write and not available to be bid out.
Q. Who will specify products like flooring and appliances?
A. There are more products that go into a kitchen than any other room. Since each situation is unique, we will help our customers select products right for there budget and situation. Often, we will make up front suggestions on finishes, colors and layout.
Q. What if I don't like the design?
A. Not every plan is accepted without revisions. Our kitchen design service includes up to two major revisions.
Q. What cabinets are available?
A. Our goal is to provide quality products to fit most budgets. We carry five lines of cabinets, including fully custom, semi custom and stock lines from Adelphi Kitchens, Bridgewood, Holiday Kitchens, Ultracraft and River Run Cabinetry.
Q. Who will be working on my kitchen?
A. A Thomson Employee! Our carpenters work directly for us. We believe that employees who receive direct pay and benefits produce high quality projects. Our carpenters manage the project and over see plumbers, electricians and any other tradesman involved in your project. In most cases, we have longstanding relationships with our electricians and plumbers. We don't pay our valued employees or other trades “under the table.” This contributes to the real economy, not the underground economy. Most of our employees have been with us over ten years, a few over twenty. Our employees underwent pre-employment drug screening and background checks. You will meet your carpenter in our pre-start meeting.
Q. How long will it take?
A. Expect your new kitchen to be completed anywhere from three to six weeks. Of course, this time frame depends on the scale and scope of the job. Simple makes overs go quickly. The more complex the job the longer it will take.
Q. How much will my new kitchen cost?
A. A new kitchen can cost anywhere from $30,000 to $150,000. A simple galley kitchen could cost in the $20,000 - $25,000 range. There is such a range of styles and tastes. Again, there is no other room in the house with so many different products installed than the kitchen. Don't expect granite, high end appliances and solid wood cabinets for $30,000. Gone are the days of laminate counter tops and white appliances. Nowadays, consumers want stainless steel appliances, granite, fancy light fixtures, tile and glass backsplashes – so gone are the days of the $25,000 kitchen (unless that is what your style and budget dictate).
Q. What about payments?
A. A draw schedule will be part of the contract. Usually, we will take a ¼ down payment and draw payments based on a schedule. Of course, we accept personal checks and edit cards. Credit card payments accepted up to $10,000 of the job cost.
Q. Can Thomson take down the wall between my dining room and kitchen?
A. Many of our jobs involve expanding living spaces. We will often remove walls and install beams and columns where necessary.
Q. Why should I use a kitchen company rather than a big box store or Swedish Furniture company?
A. We need to compare apples to apples. Big box stores are more often than not “cabinet installers,” not carpenters. Don't expect custom remodeling, a high level of detail, or a broad range of unique products. Oh yeah, and forget about removing that wall.
Q. Can Thomson Install products I supply?
A. Unless its a family heirloom or salvaged feature from the house, Thomson Remodeling will furnish and install all of the material for the job.
Q. Who will get the permits for the job?
A. Thomson Remodeling will obtain all necessary permits.
Q. Do you guaranty your work?
A. The Maryland Home Improvement Commission requires a two year warranty on workmanship, we provide a five year labor warranty on kitchen installations.
Q. Are you insured?
A. We carry all of the required licenses and insurances for conducting our trade in the state of Maryland.
Q. Who moves my furniture?
A. A lot of planning goes into every project. Careful consideration should be given to moving and storing furniture during the project. Most customers appreciate that our carpenter's time is best spent doing carpentry, rather than moving and manipulating home owner's contents. Therefore, it is best for the homeowner to move or arrange to remove all belongings and furniture from the effected areas. Temporary storage can often be placed in drive-ways. Boxes and plastic bins can be used to store kitchen items.
