Thomson Remodeling has over thirty years of experience remodeling bathrooms in Baltimore’s older homes. We know how the room was originally constructed usually before we even walk in the door. Galvanized pipes, lead traps, tile set in two to three inches or mortar, knob and tube wiring are no surprise to us. Original bathrooms almost always need to be fully gutted down to the bare studs and joists. New supply lines will often need to be run back to the source. Waste lines will need to be renewed back to the stack. Cracked and sunken tile floors are often signs of plumbing failure. Structurally, bathroom floor joists are often compromised to an alarming extent by over zealous plumbers of past eras.
It’s no joking matter how often we hear from clients who have hired a contractor at an unusually low price who began to remodel the bathroom, only to come back to the owner with demands or request for more money because they didn’t know the tile was set in three inches of mud, or the didn’t realize they’d have to re-level the floor joists, or didn’t anticipate renewing the plumbing.

Our customer purchased her eighty year old Belair-Edison row home overlooking Herring Run Park in 2003. After doing a small slate job for the customer in 2004, she called back in 2005 with a list of improvements she wanted to make.
The original master bathroom renovation to dated 1970s bath. The existing master bath was actually a very small room occupying a larger dressing area adjacent to the master bedroom.
This bathroom was the final touch on a larger remodeling project from a few years back. The original project included the construction of a third floor dormer creating a huge room in what was an empty attic. During the design phase, it was decided to create space for a future full bathroom, including a shower. So, during the construction of the dormer, new copper supply lines and copper baseboard heating was installed in an empty room that would become the bathroom.
